Steel Wire Technology: Bend Test Methods
3-point bend tests are simpler to set up than 4-point and the bend fixtures are also more affordable. The 3-point test can provide accurate flexural strength and modulus measurements when the materials are homogeneous and ductile.
4-point bend tests apply when your test samples are brittle, heterogeneous, or if surface flaws are a concern - including ceramics, and some composites. 4-point tests create a zone of constant bending moment between the inner upper loading points which reduces stress concentrations and the likelihood of premature failure at a single point. If your material's properties vary across its cross-section, such as layered composites or wood, the 4-point test offers a better measure of the bending behavior, as it tests a larger volume of the material.
Guided bend tests apply to testing of weld ductility where controlled bending to a specific angle is part of the evaluation.

Plating
In general, plating is the least expensive method of adding a corrosion-resistant metallic surface to steel wire. About 60% of all carbon-steel-wire plating is done with zinc: 20% with chromium, 10% with nickel, and the balance with aluminum, tin, copper, and brass.
The plating quality on wire is higher than on any other form of steel because drawn wire has fewer surface variations that can affect the plated finish. Plating thicknesses range from 0.0001 to 0.004 in., with most in the 0.0001 to 0.0015-in. range.
Coatings
Organic and inorganic coatings—Primarily paint, lacquer, vinyl, nylon, and epoxy are used for both appearance and functional needs. Coating range in thickness from 0.004 to 0.015 in., with moist in the 0.005 to 0.01-in. range. Coatings are also usually thinner for paints and thicker for plastics.
